aftermath and afterthoughts

As I mentioned before, we had a housewarming party this past Saturday. Despite a couple things, we think it was a success. We had a potluck, but not everyone brought food that said they would, so we were a bit short for that. There were about 40 people over, and probably 15 young kids or so. I set up a play area with a bunch of toys and space to run around for the monkeys, and then set up our big room on the side for the adults. (with alcohol and space to run around)
We had some friends stay over, and the next morning we reminised on the night before. In fact, it reminded me a lot of old college parties, where you wake up in the morning (or afternoon) and start laughing and recapping about what you remember happening. Of course, your memory isn't perfect and suddenly your roommate reminds you that you smashed a teacup with a golf club, poured dishsoap all over the counter, and made out with so-and-so. "Well," you counter, "do you remember kicking that hole in the wall over there? Or stealing that guy's hat? You're a sucker for John Deere hats." Then finally, the last roommate wakes up and yells, "Who wrote f***zifjskd** on my forehead in permanate marker?!!! I have court today you know!!!"
Ok none of that stuff actually happened, but I'm not saying people weren't hungover when they woke up. Or that the house wasn't a mess. Because we have pictures to prove it. No pictures of the actual party, because it all happened so fast we forgot to take any! Just the aftermath. Enjoy.

I painted a Welcome sign on an old piece of wood and propped it up at the bottom of our driveway so people would easily find our house.

and I hung some garland. if you can't find our house with all that, it's your fault.

the only picture from that night! we set up a projector and played music.

the morning after....

this picture is after the room was cleaned....

annnnnnnnnnnddd I'm back

Sorry for the absence of posts around here lately, but I'm still here, and still taking (occasionally) pictures of our La Réunion Life. We had a blast at our housewarming party this past Saturday, and I'll be back later this week with pictures from it (err, after it)! For now, enjoy this beautiful sunset from last week. It's from Thursday, the 17th, the night before the full moon, and even before dark came, we had a wonderful and clear view of the sky. It is full on rainy season now, and more often than not, we get clouds or showers in the afternoons and evenings. Which reminds me, the grass has grown about a foot in the past 10 days, so I think I'll go cut it now.

Hooray!

Hooray is not quite finished yet, but I wanted to take a chocolate break and share it with you anyway. I'm excited to use this on any kind of happy occasion, like for example, when Luc uses the potty for the first time, I'll hang this bad boy up. That is a big Hooray, people. Or perhaps I somehow lose this allergic reaction I have whenever I eat mangoes. (So not going to happen, but if it did, oh you better believe that's a Hooray moment!) Or, you know, I could hang it up because we're planning a housewarming party in about 10 days.
HOORAY!

in the garden

the cactus is in bloom,

as are lots of other flowers

these are combavas (kaffir limes), we used them to make our newest batch of rum

they come from this tree in our front yard

the oranges are getting bigger,

and we harvested our bananas!

it was difficult to do, because this batch grew around a metal pole, so a few got damaged along the way,
but we still have a lot, and they are quickly beginning to turn yellow

our biggest garden pest: these snails. you can see one on the banana tree above
